As we head into the hottest stretch of the summer, keeping your yard looking lush doesn’t have to mean running up your water bill. With a few smart adjustments, you can protect your landscaping, conserve water, and still enjoy a healthy, vibrant lawn through the end of the season.

Here are our top water-wise tips to help your yard thrive:

💧 Smart Watering Strategies

  • Time It Right: Water early in the morning (6–10 AM) or after 6 PM to reduce evaporation.

  • Water Deep, Not Often: Aim for deep irrigation 2–3 times per week. This encourages stronger, deeper root growth.

  • Let Nature Help: Skip watering after rain and adjust your schedule based on temperature swings.

  • Cycle & Soak: Water in shorter bursts with rest periods between cycles to help soil absorb moisture better—especially helpful on slopes or clay-heavy soils.

🌱 Lawn Maintenance Musts

  • Mow High: Set your mower to 3"–3.5". Taller grass shades the soil and helps retain moisture.

  • Keep It Sharp: A sharp mower blade gives cleaner cuts, reducing stress and water demand on your grass.

  • Grasscycling: Leave your clippings on the lawn to return nutrients naturally and improve soil moisture retention.

  • Patch It Up: Reseed any bare spots with drought-tolerant blends to help crowd out weeds and conserve water long term.

♻️ Water-Saving Landscaping

  • Mulch Everything: A layer of mulch around plants helps retain moisture and reduce weeds.

  • Drip It Good: Install drip lines or soaker hoses for flower beds and shrubs—they’re more efficient than overhead sprinklers.

  • Leak Check: Inspect your irrigation system regularly for leaks. Even a small one can waste thousands of gallons.

  • Hydrozone Your Yard: Group plants with similar water needs together to avoid overwatering.

🌞 Go Native!

Consider swapping in some native or drought-tolerant plants. They're naturally adapted to our climate, require less water, and offer built-in resilience to heatwaves and dry spells.

Making even a few of these changes can have a big impact—not just on your water bill, but on the overall health of your yard. Plus, every drop saved helps keep our community more sustainable through the dog days of summer.
